Break Away From The Ordinary

Here Is The Answer To Our Problem

A few days ago we officially traced many of South Dakota’s problems to a baby shortage.
Today we read in the Wessington Springs True Dakotan that the school in ‘Springs has eight sets of twins enrolled in pre-school to sixth grade. The twins account for 16 of the 130 students in those grades.
So there’s the answer. [...]

South Dakotan in the movie “Crash”

Just now I learned that an actor with South Dakota roots played a small part in the movie “Crash” and he continues to work in Hollywood. It’s only fair that we direct you to Doug Lund’s blog for the whole story.
“Crash” was an Oscar-winning 2005 movie about the tense interactions of strangers [...]

The Prairie Cyclone?

Here in South Dakota we like to think our leaders are of presidential timber. Maybe that’s true in all states, or maybe we’ve had especially good lawmakers. Of course, native sons Hubert Humphrey and George McGovern ran for the White House in ‘68 and ‘72, respectively, and since then there have been rumors-and-more about Larry [...]

60 Years and Drilling

“Never forget your dreams,” advised Korcak Ziolkowski, the sculptor who started the Crazy Horse carving near Custer in 1948 and continued until his death in 1982. Now it is 25 years after his death, and 60 years since the project began.
Three generations of Ziolkowskis have worked on the mountain — including eight of Ruth and [...]

No News In W. Springs This Week

Nothing of note happened this week in Wessington Springs. At least that’s the hope of the town’s newspaper editors, brothers Duke and Craig Wenzel.
For 51 weeks in the year, they publish one of South Dakota’s liveliest weeklies. The Wenzels are connected to their town like few other journalists. They know the history, the people, [...]

Put Simply: Too Few Babies

One wonders if the tightening economy and high energy prices might be the last straw for some rural neighborhoods.
Today’s paper reports on the school funding lawsuit, and all the woes associated with education funding. Higher heating costs this winter are going to be a big blow to school budgets, especially for districts with outdated buildings. [...]

Four Aces in Spink Co.

My philosophy is that the good Lord deals you five cards during every day and then it’s up to you to play them the best you can. Some hands are easier to play than others.
Wednesday wasn’t the best hand, for reasons I won’t bother you with. So I woke up Thursday morning in a [...]

Our Famous Hamburgers

For 79 years the hamburgers at Nick’s in Brookings have been sizzling on the grill. A new book by Chuck Cecil of Brookings, published by the Brookings County Historical Society, tells the history of our state’s most popular hamburger joint.
In 1929 Gladys and Harold Niklason of Spencer, IA, moved to Brookings in hopes of [...]

Ospreys in Good Hands

Today we posted a Photo Gallery on the Web site of the osprey restoration project underway in South Dakota. The effort is headed by Jane Fink Cantwell, an Idahoan who runs a raptor refuge called Birds of Prey Northwest.
Earlier this year, she gained lots of attention when she succeeded in a two-year quest to rebuilt [...]

Support Your Local Elevator

Grain elevators still provide a skyline, along with the church steeple, for most towns and cities in South Dakota. Beneath the big bins, farmers and ranchers gather in the modest office area near the scales to share local gossip and tips. In smaller towns, the elevator may have the only public coffee pot. The traditions [...]

Strange Eggs Appear On Lawn

Well-known Watertown broadcaster David J. Law discovered some strange eggs in a rabbit hole on his lawn. He has since uncovered a mysterious plot, hatched to …. well, we’ll give you the link to Radio KWAT for the full story.

Want a Crowd? Talk Wind!

Yankton’s youth called a meeting Thursday night and 100 people showed up in the Methodist Church meeting room. That’s 100 people on a beautiful August night when people could have been boating, gardening, barbecuing or a dozen other things.
Instead they came to a meeting. The subject? Wind energy.
I was mildly shocked. How often do 100 [...]
